Alberta Janet "Birdie" Derby Burge, 95, of Catlettsburg, entered heaven Thursday, June 29, 2017, at home, with her family close by. Mrs. Burge was born Sept. 17, 1921, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Richard William and Dorothy Adele Hatch Derby.
Birdie was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Talmadge Clarence "T.C." Burge a native of Mayfield; a brother, Richard Derby Jr. of California; and many other beloved family members.
Birdie graduated from Chaffey High School in Ontario, Calif., in 1939. She had many jobs in the medical field during her early years as well as a long tenure at Upland College in California, before retiring and moving to Greenup, where her husband and she enjoyed a small farm. She also spent many years in the small desert community of Banning, Calif. She loved gardening, sewing, traveling with her husband, her animals and caring for family and friends. In her later years, she became a confirmed front porch sitter and a listener of what she called "good music" - hymns and southern gospel. Above all, however, she loved to talk about her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Birdie, also known by the simple title of Grammy to most folks, was known to be sassy, spunky, stubborn, sharp witted and wise.
She will be missed by all those who knew her, especially her daughter, Carol Pack and husband Clyde; her first granddaughter, Melanie Jarrell, husband Scott and their two children, the twins, Remington and Brittany, all of Catlettsburg; her second granddaughter, Stephanie Pack of Catlettsburg; her sibling, Dorothy Ann and brother-in-law, Dominick Pelligrin of Cherry Valley, Calif.; and a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Birdie was a lifelong church goer, but she would tell you the most important thing is for you to know Jesus. Most recently, she attended New Life Church in Huntington, W.Va.
Funeral services will be noon Monday, July 3, 2017, at Miller Funeral Home with Rev. Stephanie Pack and Pastor Darrell Huffman officiating. Entombment will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends after 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Condolences may be sent to mfhfuneralhome.com.
