Avanelle Sloan, 95, of Route 2, Greenup, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, June 27, 2017, at her residence, surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Sloan was born Oct. 16, 1921, in Greenup, a daughter of the late Squire William and Sadie Pauley Cox.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Sloan; her stepmother, Nellie Messer Cox; one son, Hubert Scotty Cox; three brothers, William "Bill Ed" Edgar Cox, John Henry Cox and Odom Seth Cox; four sisters, Monnie Harmon, Ida Belle Horsley, Maudie Cox and May Cox; and one stepsister, Stella Sterling.
She retired as a grocery clerk from the former Savage Gateway in Wurtland. She was of the Freewill Baptist Faith and attended Wurtland Freewill Baptist Church and Flatwoods Freewill Baptist Church. She loved to travel, quilt, crochet and was a seamstress in her spare time.
She is survived by one daughter, JoAnn and Danny Brown of Greenup; one daughter-in-Law, Marcia Cox; four granddaughters, Janette Rioux, Pamela Card, Susan Hogsten and Melissa Kennard; seven great-grandchildren, A.J. Arguello, Emily Hogsten, Kiersten Card, Conner Hogsten, Ava Card, Cameron Hogsten and Briar Kennard; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, July 3, 2017, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup with Brother Bob Baldridge and Brother Danny Brown officiating. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
