Clara F. Johnson, of Layfayette, Ind., formerly of Russell, died Tuesday, May 9, 2017.
She was born in April 1926, in Russell,the second oldest of eleven children, to William Henry and Ina Fee Catron.
In addition to her parents and her husband, She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mandie Johnson from South Carolina.
She graduated with an RN degree in 1948 from Good Samaritan Hospital at University of Kentucky. She married Forrest D. Johnson in 1948 and had four children, Linda, Ron, Greg and Jeff.
Shortly after moving to Indiana in 1949, the family moved to a farm south of Lafayette. Clara was heavily involved in farming, church and the Dayton Mothers' Club. After working as the head nurse at General Foods for 15 years, she joined the Lafayette Tourist Club and enjoyed volunteering in the surgery waiting room at the Home Hospital.
Clara embodied beauty in her smile, personality and spirit. She also created beauty in handmade quilts, ceramics and growing roses. Forrest, who preceded her in death by ten years, wrote "Her purpose in life was to serve others intelligently, perfectly and in Christian love unconditionally. Her passion was to enjoy beauty. She always seemed to do things at the right time, in the right way, and for the right reasons. Her family thanks God for a wonderful and loving Mom."
In addition to her four children, she is survived by two daughters-in-law, Tanya Bible Johnson of Greer, S.C., and Susan Johnson of Lafayette, Ind.; 17 grandchildren, April (Rodney) Hall, Haley, Hunter and Hayden of Brookston, Ind., Angie (Mathhew) Marks, Blake Marks, Elijah, Levi and Luke Johns of Clarks Hill, Ind, Abby (Mathhew) Servies, Clayton, Collin and Caleb of Lafayette, Ind., Laurel Johnson of Greer, S.C., Austin Johnson of Stockwell, Ind., and Matthew Foster of Lafayette, Ind.; three sisters, Lila Isaacs and Anita Smart of Gainesville, Fla., and Mary Rohling of Lake San Marcus, Calif.; and a brother Walter Catron of Ashland.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 13, 2017, at White Horse Christian Center, 1780 Cumberland Avenue, West Lafayette, Ind.
Visitation with the family will be after the service.
