Don Carlos Childers Jr., 96, of Westwood, passed away at his home, Sunday, May 12, 2019.
He was born in Auxier, Ky., November 23, 1922 to Don C. Childers Sr. and Bess Bingham Childers.
Don Jr. grew up in Prestonsburg, Kentucky and after graduation he went to Baltimore, Maryland to build B-26 bombers with the Glen C Martin Co. Returning to Ky., he joined the W.W.II effort and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served with the 116th Army ground forces in North Africa, Italy, Corsica, and France. He was also with the 34th Division, 168 Infantry Band.
While in southern France he met the love of his life Suzanne Denise Figuiere of Marseille. They were married December 1945 at Notre Dame Du Mont Catholic Church. They returned to the US in 1946 to Catlettsburg, Kentucky where he resumed working for the C&O Railroad as a brakeman in the Ashland yard, retiring after 40 years.
He loved music and could play numerous instruments and was a member of the Ashland Community Chorus, Ironton Community Chorus and Holy Family church choir. He and his wife, Suzanne, were greatly involved with genealogy. Another favorite hobby he enjoyed was building model railroads.
Don was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a granddaughter; Sarah McGill, and a brother, Glen Forest Childers.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 74 years, Suzanne, include five children; Jerry Childers of Orlando, Florida, Terry (Kista) Childers of Westwood, Danny Pat (Lisa) Childers of Greenup, Kentucky, Denise (John) McGill of Westwood, and Carol Sue (Chris) Pennington of Ashland; a sister, Malinda Jane (Mike) Perdue of Catlettsburg; a sister in law, Rose Childers of Bellefonte; 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and 5 Nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 11 a.m. by Father Andrew Garner.
Visitation will be at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Preston Family Funeral Home.
