Donald Gene Caldwell, 87, of Ashland, went to be with his Lord Sunday, December 31, 2017, in King's Daughters Medical Center, his adoring family at his side.
Mr. Caldwell was born December 28, 1930, in Catlettsburg, to the late Lute B. and Ida Lambert Caldwell. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Adams Caldwell; siblings, Helen Caldwell Shivel, Edgar Caldwell, Lute Jr. "June" Caldwell, Bill Caldwell, Alta "Sally" Caldwell McDowell and Vernon Caldwell.
Don was a graduate of Thomas R. Brown High School, he served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, retired in 1995 as an operator for Kentucky Power and worked for Safco from 1969-1972 in Saudi Arabia.
He loved sports especially UK Basketball, was the founder of "Romeo's Breakfast Club" who met at Rajahs for years, sang in a quartet with brothers and a former choir director at Hyland Heights Baptist Church. Don was a member of Wildwood Baptist Church.
Left to cherish memories are his wife of 10 years, Betty Burns Caldwell; daughters, Connie Beth Saunders and her husband, Vernon, "Skip", of Catlettsburg, Janie Lewis and her husband, Bob, of Ashland, Lisa Steele and her husband John, of Grayson, KY; son, Donald Steven Caldwell and his fiancé, Amy, of Kitts Hill, OH; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service for Mr. Caldwell will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 4, 2018, at Neal Funeral Home, 2409 Center Street, Catlettsburg. Final resting place in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens. Military Honors by Post 93 of Kenova, WV, and the U.S. Navy. Pastor Jim Nichols will officiate.
Visiting hours will be from 11 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.
