Dr. Gary's Story

Dr. Gary Richard Wallace, M.D., passed away from pneumonia Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018.
Gary was born Oct. 9, 1937, in Ashland, the only child of the late Walter and Alma Wallace.
He graduated from Ashland High School in 1955, where he was one of the starting five for the Ashland Tomcats Varsity Basketball team.
Gary matriculated at Georgetown College where, he studied for a year before transferring to University of Kentucky. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and graduated with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering in 1960. He was the first member of his family to graduate from college.
Gary married Fernita Ann Lutes Aug. 7, 1960, in Falmouth.
After a short stint working for Armco Steel, he pursued his calling to become a physician by attending University of Kentucky Medical School. He served as president of his medical school class for two years. He earned his M.D. in 1966 and received the Albert Benjamin Chandler Award for being number one in his class.
After his internship, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served for two years (1967-1969), as a Captain and medical officer.
He then completed his residency in ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami (1969-1972).
Gary returned to Lexington in 1972 to practice ophthalmology and practiced for 42 years at the Lexington Clinic. He retired in 2014.
Dr. Wallace was active in the medical community, serving as Chairman of Board of the Lexington Clinic, President of Kentucky State Ophthalmology Society, President of Fayette County Medical Society, Chairman and 10-year member of Fayette County Board of Health and a long-time member of University of Kentucky Medical School Admissions Committee.
He was an active leader of Calvary Baptist Church for 45 years. Dr. Wallace was a member of Lexington Rotary Club and Lexington Country Club. He particularly enjoyed time in Vero Beach, Fla., and at Kanuga family retreat in Hendersonville, N.C.. His passions were jogging, athletics and games of all kinds. He faithfully followed UK Basketball and Cincinnati Reds Baseball.
Dr. Wallace is survived by Fernita, his loving wife of 57 years; his two daughters, Jennifer Ann Wallace Archer (John) of Miami, Fla., and Lisa Margaret Wallace Bullard (Dan) of Elon, N.C.; and his five grandchildren, Harper Elizabeth Bullard, Lauren Hancock Archer, John "Jack" Franklin Archer IV, Garrison Wallace Bullard and Grant Alexander Archer.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, at Calvary Baptist Church in Lexington.
