Dr. William's Story
Dr. William Lewis Gehringer, 65, died May 5, 2017, in St. Joseph Hospital of heart failure.
Born in Aberdeen, Md., July 1, 1951, Bill grew up in Ashland, where he was a member of the community of Temple Adath Israel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William A. and Beatrice Miller Gehringer; and a sister-in-law, Karen Morris Gehringer.
He earned three degrees from the University of Kentucky and held a doctorate in experimental psychology with research in vision and perception. He taught at Kentucky State University for 25 years. As one of his colleagues has stressed, Bill was respected because he "played an honest game, said what he meant and stood up to the mediocrity that suppresses us."
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Martha Gallion Gehringer; his twin sister, Lynn Gehringer (John) Mullins; a brother, Elliot Gehringer of Ashland; nieces, Ashley Schrock (Anthony) Lai and Hannah Schrock (Andrew) Schepper; a nephew, Gregg (Monica Leyva) Gehringer of Tuscon; seven Gallion brothers-and sisters-in-law; and a loving extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2017, at the Friends Meeting House, 649 Price Avenue.
Donations may be sent to Central Kentucky Council for Peace and Justice, the Southern Poverty Law Center, or the Woodford County Humane Society.
