Gearold Ray Opell, 83 of Catlettsburg, passed away Monday, Sept. 25, 2017, at his home with his loving family at his side.
Mr. Opell was born Dec. 10, 1933, on Bear Creek, to the late James P. and Armina Moore Opell.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Perry Opell; two sisters, Dora Catherine Nunley and Laura Virginia Carroll; three brothers-in-law, Robert Nunley, Dewey Carroll and Thomas Pace; and two sisters-in-law, Betty Opell and Walletta Opell.
Gearold attended Boyd County schools, served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and retired in 1992 as a crane operator for Armco Steel. His favorite hobby was fishing. He was a member of Durbin Independent Baptist Church.
Left to cherish his memories are his adoring wife of 59 years, Emily Carol Owens Opell; their children, Kevin Ray Opell and wife Maxine, David Perry Opell and wife Sherry, Mary Jane Hopkins and husband Howard, Billy Owen Opell and wife Diana and Stephen Andrew Opell and wife Tammy, all of Catlettsburg; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brothers, A.D. (Gloria Ann) Opell of Catlettsburg, Billy George Opell of Catlettsburg; and a sister, Sarah Jane Pace of Smyrna, Tenn.
Funeral services to honor Mr. Opell will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, at Neal Funeral Home, 2409 Center Street in Catlettsburg with Pastor Jason Porter and Pastor Brian Bussey officiating. Musical arrangements will be provided by his grandchildren, Perry Burke and Heather Lewis and his niece, Joan Opell.
Final resting place will be in Moore-Opell Cemetery on McIntyre Branch in Catlettsburg with military rites by U.S. Navy and Kenova American Legion Post 93.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Grandsons will serve as casket bearers.
