George William "Bill" Johnson, 73, of Russell, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
Bill was born March 2, 1943, in Ironton, Ohio, to the late George and Mabel Lunsford-Johnson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Fred Sikes.
Bill was a 1960 Graduate of Russell High school and attended University of Kentucky. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of 101st Airborne and retired from AK Steel He was a member of the American Legion Post 76, Ashland Elks Lodge B.P.O.E 350, Ironton VFW and a lifetime member of Ashland Fraternal Order Eagles Daniel Boone Aerie 2329. Bill was a University of Kentucky basketball fan. He captained his own house boat, Sweet Caroline, at the Worthington Marina. He enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities.
He is survived by his life companion and wife, Carol Porter; a son John (Kim) Porter; a brother and sister, Vernon (Pam) Johnson and Carol Sikes; a special friend Mike Dunaway; and his special dog, Charlie.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016, at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.
Visitation will be after noon Sunday at the funeral home.
