Hazel "Betty"'s Story

Hazel "Betty" McDowell Wright, 85, of Catlettsburg, passed away June 9, 2017, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
She was the daughter of the late Harvie J. and Thelma McDowell. She was also preceded by a son, Joe Wright in 2013; and a daughter, Maleah Wright who died at birth; sisters, Dorothy (Carl) Crace and Frankie Scott.
Betty was a graduate of Thomas R. Brown High School and Ashland Business College.
Betty was a member of Oakland Avenue Baptist Church.
She retired from the Boyd County Courthouse Property Valuation Office after 25 years of service where she was the office manager.
Her special skill was decorating and cooking. She loved to decorate the stages for the Miss Ashland and Catlettsburg Miss Flame Pageants and the yearly Thomas R. Brown/Catlettsburg High School reunions.
Betty loved her little town of Catlettsburg where she volunteered many hours of community service with the various clubs she was in. The Oakland Avenue City Park was her pride and joy she worked hard to see it always looked its best.
She is survived by a brother, Jim (Maggie) McDowell of Lexington; Betty leaves behind her loving husband of 65 years, Charles "Boots" Wright; her daughter, Kay (Don) Cole of Catlettsburg; a son, Chuck Wright of Catlettsburg; seven grandchildren, Russ (Amanda) Cole of Catlettsburg, Steven Cole of Ashland, J.D. Wright of Catlettsburg, Katti (Nathan) Tharp of Catlettsburg, Brandon Wright of North Carolina, Cody Wright of Flatwoods and Mindy McGinnis of Ohio.; four great-grandchildren whom she adored, Charlie and Violet Cole and Kayleigh and Mia Jo Tharp; and her fur baby, a full blooded collie named Bear; and she will lovingly be remembered by her extended family of many nieces, nephews and cousins; and brother-in-law, Buddy Scott.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at the Catlettsburg Cemetery. Pastor Mike Blankenship will officiate.
Rollins Funeral Home in Kenova, W.Va. is in charge of arrangement.
