Jewell Thomas Peffer, 90, of Wilmington, N.C., formerly of Grayson, left this world for a heavenly home Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, after a decades-long battle with Alzheimer's.
She was born May 5, 1927, in Butcher Hollow in Van Lear, to late Albert and Violet Cordle Thomas.
Jewell grew up in Coon Eye in Carter County. She attended Shell Rock Elementary School and graduated from Erie High School in Olive Hill. She earned undergraduate and master's degrees from Morehead State College, now Morehead State University and taught eight grades at a one-room school at Four Mile. She also taught at Shell Rock Elementary and Prichard Elementary in Grayson. She began every school day with the Pledge of Allegiance, a Bible story and songs. She said about her teaching career, "I never met a child I didn't like."
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Peffer; and seven siblings, James Thomas, Irma Clayton, Joyce Thomas, J.R. Thomas, Douglas Thomas, Phillip Gene Thomas and Sytha Lois Tolley.
She is survived by a son, Thomas (Hope) Peffer of Ashland; a daughter, Kathryn Miles Of Wilmington, N.C.; a sister, Mary Ellen Edison of Florence; four grandchildren, Sean (Pasha) Peffer, Holly (Mike) Smith, Molly Miles and Jonathan (Jennifer) Miles; two great-grandchildren, Brennan and Madeleine Peffer; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson with James Harris and Mike Smith officiating. Burial will be in Grayson Memorial Park.
Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
