Joe's Story

Joe F. Ward, 96, of Grayson, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 18, 1920, on Everman Creek, a son of the late Joe B. and Roxie Huff Ward.
Joe proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II in the 432nd Bomb Squad 17th Bomb group. He was a farmer, an employee of the State Highway Deptartment and retired form Ben Williamson in Ashland. He was a charter member of Smith Creek Enterprise Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon and clerk
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Lorene Whitt Ward; a sister-in-law, Mary L. Griffith; four nephews, Ercil Rice, Everett Rice, Eddie Roberts and Dennis Whitt; six nieces, Rosa Green, Joy Hamilton, Beverly Nangle, Linda Bush, Shirley Bowling and Janie Salmon; and a host of extended family, friends and neighbors.
The family would like to give a special thank you to his exceptional care givers, Patty Lester, Becky Burton, Diane Lewis, Carol Damron and Dorothy Harlow, his comfort keepers, Ann Duncan and Lori Hall and Community Hospice of Ashland.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, at Sparks Funeral Home. Burial will be with military rites by Kenova American Legion Post 93.
Visitation will be after noon Saturday at the funeral home.
