John Edward Kiger, 86, of Flatwoods, passed peacefully to his Heavenly home Friday, April 7, 2017, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
Mr. Kiger was born Sept. 24, 1930, in Flatwoods, to the late George and Gladys Kiger.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Wanda Weaks and Nellie Sue Brown.
John served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Wisconsin during the Korean Conflict. During his time in the service, he received the National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal. John was a lifelong member of Advance Memorial United Methodist Church in Flatwoods. After many years of service, John retired as a railroad engineer for CSX and served many years as a volunteer at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital. He truly enjoyed being with his family and playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Irwina Wilson Kiger; two daughters, Susan Lee (Charles) Stephens and Mary Jane (Richard) Worthington; three grandchildren. John (Ashley) Stephens, Melissa (Steve) Evans and Kendall Worthington; five great-grandchildren, Braden, Benton, Penelope, Nora and Benjamin; a sister-in-law, Mary Darby; and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 10, 2017, at Advance Memorial United Methodist Church in Flatwoods with Mark Wilson and Ryan Russell officiating. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.
Friends may call after 11 a.m. Monday at the Church.
