John Douglas Spears, 94, of Catlettsburg, passed away peacefully August 3, 2017, at Woodland Oaks.
He was the son of the late John W. and Mary M. Spears of Catlettsburg.
Mr. Spears was a WWII veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor. He served in the US Navy from 1941-1945 aboard the Battleship USS West Virginia and the Destroyer USS Bush. He retired from Ashland Oil, Inc. where he worked 41 years as a diesel mechanic at the Marine Repair Terminal. Mr. Spears was a member of South Ashland United Methodist Church and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Ann Riffe Spears. Together they have a son, Ed Spears (Cheryl) of Catlettsburg; and a daughter, Vicky Brenner (Paul) of Marietta, Ga. Mr. Spears has two grandchildren, Chris Ronay of Englewood, Fla. and Eric Ronay (Lindsey) of Louisville; great-grandchildren, Cooper and Peter Ronay of Louisville; Besides his parents and wife, Mr. Spears was also preceded in death by their daughter, Debra Kay Spears; one brother and four sisters.
There will be a private family service at a later time.
Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
