Joy Ellen Fairchild Griffiths, 84, of Ashland, died peacefully Sunday morning, March 11, in Community Hospice Care Center.
Joy was born June 25, 1933, in Ashland, a daughter of the late Troy and Imogene Hankes Fairchild. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by a son, Robert Morris Griffiths; and a brother, Troy E. Fairchild Jr.
Joy was a lifelong resident of Ashland and a graduate of Ashland High School.
She continued the legacy started by her father, Troy E. Fairchild in 1927, Fairchild Buick Cadillac Pontiac, Inc. from 1950 until she retired in 1987. Joy was the second female to be an automobile dealer in the United States having won numerous awards for excellent customer service, sales performance and customer satisfaction. She also built and managed Fairhill Estates as well as many other rental properties in the Ashland area for over 50 years.
Joy formerly served as a member of the board of directors of the Kentucky Arthritis Foundation, Kentucky Horse Park (charter board appointed by the governor), Kentucky Chamber of Commerce (past president), Hack Estep & Ramey Home. She was also an active member of the Kentucky Automobile Dealers and National Automobile Dealers Association, Ashland Pilot Club, Three Arts Club of Ashland, American Cancer Society and American Heart Association. Joy was also the past president of the Ashland New Car Dealers Association and was a former Candystriper at King's Daughters Medical Center. She was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church, Ashland Rotary Club, Ashland Kiwanis Club and the Presbyterian Choir.
In 2016 she received the Ashland Rotarian of the Year Award and previously received the Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award.
Joy is survived by three children, James Michael Kilgore and wife, Anita, of Myrtle Beach, NC; Teresa Joy Griffiths Runyon and her husband, Jim, of Ashland; and John Thomas Griffiths and his wife, Colleen, of Ironton; a sister, Mary Webster of Naples, Florida; seven grandchildren, Stephen Lee Runyon, Lauren Louise Runyon, Rebecca Courtland Kilgore, Tyler Clark Kilgore, Aaron Joshua Murphy, Isabella Marie Griffiths and Lora Lei Ashley Griffiths; three great-grandchildren, Hayley Marie Glover, Freya Dawn Murphy and Amelia Rose Runyon.
A memorial service will be Tuesday, March 13, at 7 p.m. at Preston Family Funeral Home.
Friends may visit after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
