Larry O. Barker, 72, of San Diego, California, died Tuesday, December 5, 2017, after a battle with lung cancer.
Larry was born December 18, 1944, in Ashland, Kentucky, a son of the late Richard Olney and Faye Louise Barker.
Larry lived in San Diego over 40 years and worked as an attorney after receiving his law degree from the University of Louisville.
Larry was in the first graduating class from Paul G. Blazer High School in 1963. He played several sports during his school years. He earned the nickname of "machine man" in high school because he could keep running and going and never seemed to run out of energy. He continued exercising at least an hour a day throughout life until the cancer took hold and made it more difficult. Larry enjoyed sports, travel and meeting people.
In 1986 he spent a year traveling around the world. He visited many countries too numerous to mention. He enjoyed playing basketball and riding the Pacific Ocean's big waves on his boogie board. He managed to get back to Ashland a couple times a year to see family.
The family is forever grateful to Peggy Burns, Larry's long time companion. She took excellent care of him during his last days.
He is survived by his long time, companion Peggy Burns of San Diego; a sister, Linda Mae Barker of Ashland, Kentucky; a brother, Paul E. Stringer Sr. (Nell) of Ashland, Kentucky; nephews Paul Edward Stringer, Jr. (Sandy) of League City, Texas and Richard Alan Stringer (Lori) of Ashland, Kentucky; four great-nieces and nephews, Kaitlin (fiancé Jared), Ben (Taylor), Leslie and David Stringer.
There are no services planned.
