Retired Master Sergeant James's Story
James Edward Holton Sr., 86, of Grayson, went to be with his Lord Thursday, Aug. 3, 2017, in Harbor Heath Care in Ironton, Ohio.
James was born April 16, 1931, in Moncl, W.Va., a son of the late John V. and Sally Ann Combs Holton.
He was of the Baptist faith and attended Grayson Nazarene Church. He retired from the U.S, Army and served in the Korean conflict where he was held prisoner for three years.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dollie Tomlin; and second wife, Mildred Tomoe; a grandson, Jason Bush; three brothers, Tommy Holton, Miles Owens and Charlie Holton; two sisters, Ruth Lybrand and Jona Mae Holton.
He is survived by his wife, Vina Elliott Shaffer Holton; five sons, John Vernon Holton of N.C., James Edward Holton Jr. of N.C., David Glen Holton of Virginia, Eddie Joe Holton of N.C. and Freeman "Shorty" Shaffer of Grayson; four daughters, Debbie Campbell of N.C., Kathy Shaak, Mary Bush and Jan Varney, all of Grayson; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, August 7, 2017, at Malone Funeral Home with James Harris minister. Burial will be in Northeast Kentucky Veterans Cemetery with full military rites.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
