Rex's Story

Rex Elliott Flowers, 86, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Ashland, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017, in Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
Rex was born Feb. 11, 1931, in Ramah, Colo., a son of the late Joseph William and Agnes Franklin Flowers.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Jean Rose Flowers; a sister, Audrey Flowers Heinricy; and three brothers, Roy Lee Flowers, Lyle Flowers and Lynn Flowers
Mr. Flowers retired as the Postmaster in Frenchburg, Ky., after many years of service with the United States Postal Service. He enjoyed bowling and was on a local bowling league in Sarasota. He proudly served his country during the Korean War with the U.S. Navy.
Rex loved his family. He took great pleasure in recounting stories from his youth and enjoyed writing memoirs of his life. He will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his son, Lynn Elliott Flowers of Ashland; three daughters, Linda Flowers Blevins and husband Lowell of Ashland, Tracey Flowers Morgan and husband Dan of Sarasota, Fla., and Lisa Flowers Byrd and husband Donald Ray of Southport, N.C.; nine grandchildren, James Pennington, Jennifer Pennington, William Roberts, Evan Morgan, Kasey Morgan, Justin Taylor, Laura Taylor, Katie Taylor and Matthew Byrd; six great-grandchildren, Frank "Trey" Kiser III, Quentin Hoffman, Maddox Hoffman, Aubree Hoffman, Aivere Hoffman and Aniston Upchurch; three sisters, Eleanor Flowers Norden, Violet Flowers Merritt and Christen Flowers Petre; and a host of extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, 2017, at Rose Hill Burial Park Masoleum Chapel by Bill Harris.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Steen Funeral Home 13th Street Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Rex's memory to Shriners Hospital for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
