Shirley's Story

Shirley Ann "Nanny" Yates, 81, of Winchester, Va., passed away peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017, in Blue Ridge Hospice Inpatient Care Center.
Ms. Yates was born in 1936 in Wurtland, the daughter of the late Archie C. and Nola Adams.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond P. Yates, whom she married May 1, 1984, in Flatwoods; two sisters, Jeannette Barker and Dorothy French; two brothers, Woody and Ishmael Adams; and a grandson, Alexander Barr Lykins.
She graduated from Wurtland High School and worked as a bartender and waitress. She was a member of the Eagles and Moose. She enjoyed playing bingo and poker, was blessed to have traveled to every state except Hawaii and a past radio show host in Cincinnati for "Lunch Hour at Dollhouse".
Above all, her greatest passion was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
A beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother that will be missed.
She is survived by children, Richard Dale (Cecilia) Crawford, Amy Joan (Mark) Boggs, Billy Ray (Nellie) Yates and Alan Reed (Kyle) Crawford; grandchildren, Cassandra Ann (BJ) Fannin, Adam Scott (Chrissy) Lykins, Andrea Nikole (Troy) Bunch, Remington Logan (Megan) Crawford, Preston Yates, Joshua Derick (Jessica) Boyd and Rachel Ann (TJ) Cook; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Terry Scott (Martha) Adams; a brother-in-law, Dr. Glennard French; sisters, Charlotte Holt, Eva Gay Nicely and Betty Gayhart; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
A Committal Service will be at noon today at Culpeper National Cemetery in Culpeper, Va.
