Steven Michael Harvey of Ashland and New York entered into eternal rest Dec. 15, 2016. Steve was 59 years old.
The son of Samuel Harvey and the late Eleanor Beetham Harvey, he was born Oct. 13, 1957, in Hampton, Va. In addition to his mother, he was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth Harvey Haxton; paternal grandparents, Samuel Walter and Elsie Hook Harvey; and maternal grandparents, Samuel and Mary Early Beetham.
Steve was a graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School class of 1975. He then earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Kentucky followed by a master's degree at Columbia University in New York City. Steve loved sports and was passionate about working with young people. He coached the Jets of the Ashland Junior Football League to numerous championships in the 1980's and 1990's. He also helped coach the Ashland Babe Ruth All-Star baseball team that reached the World Series in 1993. Following graduate school, he worked as a psychiatric counselor for children at Albert Einstein Medical Center in the Bronx, N.Y. Steve was kind, smart and witty and will be missed by his family and friends.
Steve is survived by his father, Samuel Harvey in Ashland; a sister, Pamela Harvey-Rath; nieces Breana, Meriel and Nerina Rath of Amberley, New Zealand; an aunt, Marilynn Harvey Petrillo of Fishkill, N.Y.; cousin Craig Harvey McCoy and Melissa McCoy of New York.
A memorial will be announced for the spring.
Steen Funeral Homes in Ashland is in charge of arrangments.
The family requests no flowers but donations can be made to the Shriners Children Hospital in Lexington.
