William Eugene "Gene" Carter, 85, of Ashland, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017, in Community Hospice Care Center, after an extended illness, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born June 28, 1932, in Ashland, the son of the late William Harmon and Clara Dell Workman Carter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Verna Mae Nolte, Virginia Lee Adkins and Anita Louise Clay; and one brother, John Carter.
He retired from the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War and the Ashland Police Department. Gene loved spending time with his family and traveling when he was able. He was a member of Unity Baptist Church, a lifetime member of Ashland FOP Lodge 3 and a Kentucky colonel.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda Clay Carter; four daughters, Lee Ann Conley, Diana Lynn (Joe) Baer, Melinda Sue (Bill) Rakes and Stacy Marie (Robert) Caron, all of Ashland; one son, William Keith (Gail) Carter of Catlettsburg; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2017, at Miller Funeral Home with Pastor Jeremy Couture officiating. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens with military rites by Kenova American Legion Post 93.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
