Charles William Bennett, 95, of Ashland, passed away in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, July 28, 2017.
Mr. Bennett was born in Parsons, W.Va., March 1, 1922.
He was the son of the late Rev. H.V. Bennett and the late Frances Moore Bennett. In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Willis Bennett; brother Howard Bennett; and two sisters, Ethel Bennett and Mary Jo Plymale.
Mr. Bennett owned the J. C. Willis Insurance Agency. He was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church. Mr. Bennett served during WWII in the 10th Mountain Division. He was a founding member of the Continental Dance Club. Charles was a long-time member of Bellefonte Country Club and an avid golfer. Mr. Bennett was a member of the Elks. He was active in skeet-shooting and tennis in the Ashland area. Charles graduated from Marshall University with a degree in Journalism. He was known as a voracious reader with a passion for history and travel.
Mr. Bennett is survived by his son, Dr. William Bennett and wife Ann of Spokane, Wash. and their daughters, Allison Bennett of New York City, and Caroline Bennett of Spokane; son John H. Bennett of Ashland; daughter Jeannette Cherry and husband Charles of Monument, Colo., along with their children, Charles Bennett Cherry of Santa Fe, NM, John Stephen Cherry of Denver, Colo., William Bryan Cherry of Denver, and Ashley Cherry, of Laramie, Wyo.; a niece, Barbara Sedia and husband Bob of Mercerville, NJ; and nephew, Gregg Willis and wife Jeri of Ashland.
A private memorial service will be at a future date.
