Debra's Story

Debra Lewis Gash, 63, of South Portsmouth, peacefully drifted away in the arms of her lord Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017, at home after complications resulting from a battle with Lewy Body Dementia.
Debbie was born May 21, 1953, in Portsmouth, Ohio, a daughter of the late Paul Lewis and Fern Simmons Lewis.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Roger Lewis; and beloved mother-in-law, Ethel Gash
Debbie was a loving, caring and joyful person who loved her church, traveling, particularly to the beach, horses and horseback riding, bowling, attending Red's baseball games, and her fur babies, Callie and Alley.
A member of First Baptist Church of South Shore since her teens, Debbie had been retired from the health care industry after more than 25 years of service. She started her career as a nurses aide and surgical aide at Mercy hospital, working in the office of Dr. Billy Riddle. She completed the remainder of her career at Southern Ohio Medical Center as a nurses aide and unit clerk.
She is survived by her husband, Daniel L. Gash; sister, Sharon (Don) Brown of Springboro, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Sandy Lewis; two nephews, Eric (Veronica) Brown and Justin Lewis; a niece, Stephanie Lewis; three great-nephews, Mason Brown, Hunter Hernandez and Hayden Hernandez; and a great-niece, Madison Brown; beloved cousins, Vicki (Bill) Fisher, Teresa (Doug) Miller, Leon (Larie) Smith, Larry (Vicki) Smith and many cousins in the Smith, Simmons, Hartley and Cooper families; and those she viewed as sisters, Gwenda Hacker, Janie Coomer, Toni Schmeltz, Marilyn Chaney, Bonnie McKeag, Sharon Williams, Ruth McCleese and Eunice Stephenson.
The family would like to extend it's sincere thanks and appreciation to the excellent care provided over the last few months by Hospice of Hope in Maysville, Dr. James McGinnis, the SOMC Senior Behavioral Unit staff and Hospice of Hope Care Center. A special thanks to Hospice of Hope Home Care providers, Amanda, Daniel, Kristin, and Keith who have been with Debbie for much of this journey and to Wanda Angel who assisted in her care.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 4, 2017, at Morton Funeral Home in South Shore with Mark Lilly officiating. Burial will be in Siloam Cemetery in South Shore.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 3, 2017, at the funeral home.
