Edith Sparks Strother, 100, passed away peacefully Thursday, June 15, 2017, at her residence in Grayson, following an extended illness.
She was born June 18, 1916, in Martha in Lawrence County, the daughter of the late Dr. H.H. and Mrs. Mary Gambill Sparks.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Homer Sparks.
Mrs. Strother was a Christian and a member of First Church of Christ of Grayson, where she was a nursery school teacher for over 40 years. She took great pleasure over the years in keeping up with "her kids". She was a homemaker and devoted her life to her family, church and community. Mrs. Strother was active in many local clubs, organizations and community projects, including establishing home mail delivery in Grayson and the drive to secure a public library. She was always a huge promoter of Grayson and all its activities.
Mrs. Strother is survived by her loving husband of 76 years, Jack Strother Sr.; a son, Jack (Celia) Strother Jr. of Grayson; a daughter, Mary Inez Stoops of Annapolis, Md.; three grandchildren, Mark (Krista) Strother of Grayson, Lisa (Mark) Griffith of Union and Julie (Howard) Argo of Greenwood, Del.; and six great-grandchildren, Matthew and Mary Kate Strother, Nathan and Wendy Griffith and Jocelyn and Howard Argo.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 18, 2017, at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson with Scott Ford and Tim Nischan officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Grayson. Pallbearers will be the elders of First Church of Christ.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 17, 2017, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Ashland or First Church of Christ of Grayson.
