Edwin James "E.J." Walbourn III, of Florence, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017, in St. Elizabeth Hospital - Florence, after a long illness.
E.J. was born Feb. 18, 1952, in El Dorado, Kan., to Edwin James Walbourn Jr. and Frances Fisher Walbourn.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He graduated as salutatorian from El Dorado High School in 1970, University of Kentucky in 1973 and University of Kentucky College of Law in 1977.
He married Janice Yates Walbourn Aug. 25, 1979.
After law school, E.J. worked with the Federal Public Defender's Office in Lexington. He moved to Ashland and worked with the firm of Hermansdorfer & Templeton from 1983 to 1990. He became a federal prosecutor and served as Interim United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky in 2010 and 2011. E.J. retired from the practice of law in September of 2016.
He is survived by his wife, Jan of Florence; two sons, Jacob and wife Amanda of Lexington and Joseph of St. Louis, Mo; a sister, Virginia Walbourn Himes of Casper, Wyo.; and one granddaughter, Madelyn.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2017 at Faith Community United Methodist Church located at 4310 Richardson Road in Independence with Pastor Daniel Nikolich officiating.
Friends and family may visit the family at home from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017.
Stith Funeral Homes in Florence is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in E.J.'s honor to National Kidney Foundation, the ASPCA, or the Walbourn Scholarship Fund at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan.
