Fred's Story

Fred Mitchell Michelson, 62, of Ashland, passed away Saturday, March 18, 2017, in King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
He was born Oct. 25, 1954, in Ashland, a son of the late Edward and Sylvia (Rothstein) Michelson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, David Silverman.
Fred was a 30 year veteran of the Kentucky Army National Guard where he served as Personnel Sergeant for the 201st Engineer Battalion. He was an avid golfer and camper who won the Ping Pong State Championship. Most importantly he had a strong love for family and friends.
Survivors include his children, Anthony Welch and his wife, Angela, of Norfolk, Va., and Jennifer Messer of Rush; sister Linda Meyer of Bloomington, Ind.; grandchildren, Hailee Messer, Natalie Messer, Grace Willis and Liam Welch; fiancé Rebekah Bryant of Ashland; best friends, Randy Coburn and Roy McDowell of Ashland, and Junior Castle of Portsmouth, Ohio.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland with graveside services with full military rites immediately following at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North East in Greenup County.
A reception will be immediately following the services at the Kentucky National Guard Armory, 2519 Lexington Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.
