Lewis's Story

Lewis Wallace Dunn, 86, of Ashland, passed away Monday, Aug. 28, 2017, at home after a year and a half battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS).
He live a full, productive and meaningful life. He never knew a stranger and live daily out his faith by helping others. He loved his family, his church and the community of Ashland.
He was born Dec. 25, 1930, in Ashland, to the late Drexel and Mary Wallace Dunn.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Libby May Dunn; and a stepdaughter, Sheri McQuaid.
Lewis is survived by his wife Kenna Smith Dunn; two children, Patty Dunn (David) Raisor and Steven Drexel (Janie) Dunn; two stepchildren, Larry (Christina) Scaggs and Stevie (Julie) Yates.; one sister, Margie Dunn Welch Reed of Waverly, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, Bryan (Chasity) Raisor, Craig (Lisa) Raisor, Ashley Raisor (Tommy) Haggin, Meredith Raisor (Tyler) Carter, Leslie Dunn (Ryan) Dean, Erica Dunn (Matt) Harless, JD (Krystal) McQuaid, Morgan Harris, Mason Scaggs, Jacob Yates and Jonah Yates; 20 great-grandchildren, Madison Raisor, Hadley Raisor, Lyla Raisor, John Thomas Raisor, Briggs Haggin, Libby Haggin, Joyce Haggin, Elle Carter, Jack Carter, Reese Carter, Evan Dean, Levi Dean, Olivia Dean, Maleek Harless, Kalep Harless, Makhi Harless, Makayla Harless, Kadence McQuaid, Kyla McQuaid and Autumn McQuaid.
Lew was a graduate of University of Kentucky with a mechanical engineering degree and member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He served in the U.S. Air Force as 1st Lieutenant and was stationed in Albuquerque, N.M. He spent his career with Armco/AK Steel. He started as a mechanical design engineer, then maintenance engineer, construction engineer for Project 600, general formal of Steam Power and lubrication engineer for special projects. He was a member of Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers and served as a past president.
In retirement, Lew owned and managed rental property. He operated and maintained Armco Credit Union Wastewater plant as a consultant. He taught industrial hydraulics and commercial maintenance for participants in drug court. He inspected and operated waste water plants throughout Eastern Kentucky.
Lew combined his love for family, church and community. He served as a volunteer in many areas. He was previous board member and past president of the Greater Ashland Swim Association and a U.S. Swimming official. He served the Ashland School System as a previous chairman of the school board's long range planning committee as well as a volunteer engineer consultant for Blazer pool and properties. Lew was involved in Community Chest United Fund and served as the Boyd County/Ashland General Chairman. He was a previous Kentucky Chairman of Tri-State Council sustaining member drive of the Boy Scouts of America and assisted Troop 112 and Explorers Post 114 as an advisor.
He has served in various offices of the Kentucky Highlands Museum, Ashland Regional Pilots Club, Ashland/Boyd County Regional Airport Board and Continental Dance Club.
Lew was a charter member of South Ashland Lions Club and had many offices over 60 years. He has a passion for Habitat for Humanity and personally assisted with the building of 36 homes in the Ashland/Ironton area.
He was an active member of First United Methodist Church where he was a board member, trustee and chairman of renovation programs.
Lew left a legacy of faith and service to his family and community.
A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 1, 2017, at First United Methodist Church in Ashland with his son and daughter, Patty Raisor and Steven Drexel Dunn officiating. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and after 10 a.m. Firday at the church.
Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.
