Lt. Col. Carl's Story
Lt. Col. Carl E. Smith, U.S. Army (Ret.), passed away Monday, March 13, 2017, in San Antonio, Texas.
He was born Aug. 24, 1948, in Grayson, to Harmer and Virginia Claxon Smith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia A. Hoef.
He was a proud alumnus of the University of Kentucky and proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1999. During his active duty, he was a social worker and loved to play golf in his leisure time. He most recently was working for the AMEDD Center and School at Ft. Sam Houston.
Carl is survived by his wife, Kathleen Gober Smith; two daughters, Melissa D. (Christopher) Rodriguez and Staci D. (Nolan J.) Guillot; three grandchildren, Dillon S. Rodriguez, Alanis E. Rodriguez, Maeve E. Rodriguez; a brother, Robert D. (Betty) Smith; two nieces, Lisa R. Smith and Devra H. LeFevre; two sisters, Marguerite (Raymond) Hoef and Donna Sue (Ed) Hardy; and five nephews, John Hoef, Robert Gilbert, Matthew Smith, Bryon Hardy and Eric Hardy.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson with Johnny Riley officiating. Interment will be in Smith-Claxon Cemetery with full military rites.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
