Mary Ellen Walters, 69, of Flatwoods, peacefully passed July 30, 2017, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on Mother's Day, May 9, 1948, in Ashland, a daughter of the late Eugene C. and Lillian Gilley Turley of Flatwoods.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Turley of Greenup.
She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Gary D. Walters; three daughters, Alison Walters Smith and husband Marty of Nicholasville, Erin Walters Hunter of Tampa, Fla., and Brooke Walters Hamilton of Lexington; one son, Tyler D. Walters and fiancé Ashley Chin of Chicago, Ill.
She and Gary were blessed with seven grandchildren, Alex and Lucas Hunter, Grant Hamilton, Dylan, Ainsley, Nicholas and Finn Smith. She is also survived by a sister, Debby Turley Atkins of Russell; one brother, Brian Dee Turley and wife Connie of Charlotte, N.C.; and a host of family and friends that will mourn her passing.
She retired from Russell Independent School System in 2004. As a teacher for 28 years, she impacted generations of elementary students with her humble, kind and serving spirit. She was a lifetime member of Advance United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher. She was a member of Kentucky Retired Teachers Association and Greenup County Retired Teachers Association. After retirement, her greatest joy was to travel and spend time with her family.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2017, at Advance United Methodist Church in Flatwoods with Rev. Don Young and Rev. Sean Schroll officiating. Burial will be in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North East in Greenup County.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and after noon Wednesday at the church.
