Pauline Shannon Hunt, 88, of Catlettsburg passed away Monday Dec. 26, 2016, in King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
Mrs. Hunt was born March 15, 1928, in Buchanan, to the late George and Lucy Lakin Shannon.
In addition to her parents, Pauline was preceded in death by her daughter, Judith Lynn Murphy; a son, Thomas R. Hunt Jr.; a brother, George Sam Shannon; three sisters, Betty Burnette, Alma Preston and Margaret Heaberlin; a son-in-law, James Payne IV; and three brothers-in-law, Frank Burnette, Paris Preston and John Asher.
Pauline was Salutatorian of her Thomas R. Brown High School Class and a graduate of Ashland Business College. She faithfully served the City of Catlettsburg as Mayor and City Clerk for more than 37 years. She was a member of National Association for Female Executives, American Society for Public Safety, Rebecca's Lodge, First Methodist Church and International Correspondence Schools (American Federation of Arts). Pauline took a course in writing creativity and spent 10 years as an art instructor in her home giving private lessons. She sponsored and conducted a free six week summer art course at the Youth Center and City Hall and sponsored an annual art exhibit for several years. She won art awards and ribbons, including second place in the Tri-State Art Show.
In Pauline's own words, "The Award that I prize most is a trophy presented to me by the Catlettsburg Police and Firemen. They said that it was for outstanding service to the Police and Firemen's Pension Fund, that through dedication and wise investment that I had succeeded in contributing to the growth of the Pension Fund in four and one half years what previously took 18 years, the amount of $100,000".
Pauline worked two years fulltime with exceptional children in the public school system and was a substitute teacher and tutoror for exceptional children for several years. She was City Clerk for five years, from 1974 to 1979 and elected to the office of City Treasurer four times.
She is survived by her husband Thomas R. "Tom" Hunt; two daughters Teresa Ann Payne of Ashland and Tomi Jean Hunt of Catlettsburg; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Asher of Catlettsburg and Ann (Ronald) Bryan of Catlettsburg; and a brother-in-law, Hollice Heaberlin.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Pauline's life will be at 2 p.m. today at Catlettsburg United Methodist Church with Chaplin Sam Corns and Pastor Charles Allen officiating. Internment will be in Kavanaugh Chapel Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at noon today at the church.
Kilgore and Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg is in charge of arrangements.
