Sandra's Story

Sandra "Gagi" Dixon Whitaker, 74, of Ashland, passed into peace Wednesday, April 5, 2017, in Community Hospice Care Center.
She was born April 20, 1942, in Pittsburg, Penn., the daughter of the late James E. and Sarah Ethel Slone Dixon. The dedicated, loving wife of John M. Whitaker Jr. and treasured "Gagi" of Erica Whitaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a beloved son, Stephen Michael Whitaker; a brother, Ed Stanley; and her grandmother, Belva Mae Edmond.
She was retired from the Boyd County Branch of the Department For Community Based Services and a Kentucky Colonel. In her lifetime she greatly enjoyed traveling and was privileged to travel extensively overseas to Europe, Morocco and Guam, as well many locations within the United States, as a result of her husband's career in the U.S. Air Force. Her hobbies included baking and decorating cakes and watching British Comedies on PBS.
She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, John Maynard Whitaker Jr.; a son, James E. (Rema) Whitaker of Greenup; a special granddaughter that she and her husband raised, Erica (Christopher Swecker) Whitaker of Morgantown, W.Va.; one grandson; three great-grandchildren, Bowie, Wiley and Delilah; a special niece, Dr. Brooke Stanley of South Carolina; a sister-in-law, Linda Stanley of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; and special friends, Roseann Sloas of South Shore and Ramona Stephens of Greenup; and many cherished friends and family members.
A special thanks to the caring Hospice nurses and caretakers, Cheryl Prichard and Beth Marshall.
Funeral services will be at noon Monday, April 10, 2017, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland with The Rev. Carl R. Hupp officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.
The family will receive friends after 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
