Sherry's Story

Text size

Sherry Lynn Stafford Williams, of Ashland, died Thursday, May 4, 2017, after a personalized fight with cancer.
She was born Nov. 26, 1949, in Kenova, W.Va., to the late Paul Raymond Stafford and Frances Young Stafford Alley of Catlettsburg.
She was preceded in death by her loving stepfather in 2014, Jim Alley; paternal grandparents, Leslie J. and Florence Ratliff Stafford; maternal grandparents, Julius Sr., and Alpha New Young; two grandchildren/stillborn, Larra and Rainey Nelson; and a very special aunt, Erma L. Stephens.
Sherry was a 1967 graduate of Catlettsburg High School and was proud to be a Wildcat! She loved going back to the old Catlettsburg gym where she had many memories. She often said that "Going into that gym was like stepping back 50 years and being with everyone again who had already gone on." Her most recent time spent there was helping coach her granddaughter's grade school basketball team. She also served as girls basketball coach several years ago at Poage Elementary School in Ashland.
She received certification from Ashland Business College and Ashland Community College/Dental Assisting. She retired in 2010 as a Certified Dental Assistant/Office Manager after a total of 35 years, a career she had the utmost respect for. Sherry was a member of the Crossroads Baptist Church.
She was a loving and devoted Mimi and was so very proud of her "Babies." She had a very strong work ethic and enjoyed working in her yard. She was always willing to help anyone in anyway. Her personal motto was, "I did it my way-regrets-a few but too few to mention."
In addition to her mother, she is surviving by a daughter, Kimberly Collins (Larry) Nelson of Catlettsburg; five grandchildren, Tyler Rucker, Brittany Rucker, Bailey Rucker, Lainey and Tucker Nelson, all of Catlettsburg; a sister, Paula Sue Stafford Fosson of Catlettsburg; and a nephew Todd Allen Grizzle of New York.
In honor of Sherry's wishes, there will be no public service or visitation.
A private graveside committal service for family will be in Catlettsburg Cemetery.
