Sylvia Lucile Brooks Ewing, 79, of Catlettsburg and Nokomis, Fla., passed into the arms of her Heavenly Father April 21, 2017, while travelling abroad.
Sylvia was the daughter of the late James Hilliard Brooks and Naomi Lucile Ham Brooks. She was born in Oxford, Miss., and raised in Corinth, Miss., and Tupelo, Miss. In 1956, Sylvia graduated from Tupelo High School and then continued her education at Mississippi University for Women with a BA in Mathematics and English.
After graduation, Sylvia worked for Union Carbide at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn. While in Oak Ridge she married Sam Ewing in 1963. He was the son of Gardner and Garnet Ewing of Catlettsburg. After relocating to Catlettsburg, she began teaching mathematics in Ashland school system and finished her nearly thirty-year teaching career in Boyd County school system. Sylvia was a member of First Baptist Church of Ashland and First Baptist Church of Venice, Fla.
Sylvia enjoyed playing bridge and had become a Bronze Life Master over her career, continuing to play actively until her death. She was active with choir in both churches she attended. She enjoyed world travel in retirement, visiting six of seven continents.
The love of Sylvia's heart was her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Thomas Ewing, in 2016.
She leaves behind a sister, Barbara Hilliard Brooks of Fulton, Miss; two beloved sons, Brooks Gardner (Beth) Ewing of Cincinnati, Ohio and William James (Sabrina) Ewing of Russell; four precious grandchildren, Trevor Davis Ewing, Shelby Nicole Ewing, Samuel James Ewing and Joseph Grant Ewing; her mother-in-law, Garnet Marie Crider; her sister-in-law, Robin Ewing Stuart; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at First Baptist Church in Ashland with Mike Neal officiating. Burial will be in Catlettsburg Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2017, at Neal Funeral Home in Catlettsburg.
