Ashland, KY - Bruce Clay York, 85, of Ashland, Kentucky, passed away on August 3, 2026, in the city where he was born and lived much of his life. He was born on March 7, 1941, in Ashland, Kentucky, and spent his years building a life marked by devotion to family, faith, hard work, and a warm sense of humor that brought comfort and laughter to those around him.

Bruce was the loving husband of Joanne Hall York of Ashland and a devoted father to his son, Alan York and wife Amy of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, and his daughter, Laura Butler and husband Jammie of Ashland. He was a proud grandfather to Sarah York, whom he adored deeply. He is also survived by his sister, Karen Cross of Ashland. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Rosamond Griggs York. His family was the center of his life, and he treasured every opportunity to spend time with them, share stories, and offer his steady support and love.

A graduate of Ashland High School, Bruce carried the values of his upbringing throughout his life. He was known as a man who worked diligently and took pride in doing things the right way. He retired from AK Steel after years of faithful service, where he worked in electronics and scale repair. Bruce served honorably in the Kentucky Army National Guard, reflecting his commitment to duty and his willingness to serve his country with integrity.

Bruce was a Christian and a member of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. His faith was an important part of his life, and it guided the way he treated others. He was kind, funny, and loving, and those qualities were evident in the way he spoke and the way he listened. He had a gift for making people smile, and his humor often came through in his playful nature and his reputation as a jokester. He had a way of brightening a room simply by being present.

He was an avid UK sports fan and followed the team with enthusiasm. He enjoyed traveling, especially beach vacations, where he could relax and enjoy the beauty of the water and the warmth of the sun. Bruce also liked visiting Central Park in Ashland, a place that held special meaning for him and offered a familiar setting for reflection and enjoyment. Whether he was spending time at home, sharing a laugh with family, or taking in the simple pleasures of life, Bruce found joy in the moments that mattered most.

Those who knew Bruce will remember a man of steady character and genuine kindness. His presence brought reassurance, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who loved him. The memories he created with his family and friends will remain a lasting source of comfort and gratitude.

Bruce Clay York leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and laughter. Though he has departed this earthly life, the example he set and the love he shared will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

Funeral services will be held at 6:00pm Thursday evening at the Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel by Rev. Deanna Bradley. Visitation will be prior to services beginning at 5:00pm at the funeral home.

Burial will be held privately at the Ashland Cemetery.
