Ashland, KY - Charity Jean Weekley Moore, a cherished matriarch and respected community member passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026, at the age of 104 in Ashland, KY. Born on September 6, 1921, in Jackson County, West Virginia, Charity lead a life marked by dedication to her family, her career and her community.
The daughter of Ulysses Grant and Charolette Robinson Weekley, Charity was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by her parents, her husband Attorney James H. Moore Jr., her beloved daughter Patricia Joyce Hornby, her granddaughter Sarah Hornby Perry, and her twelve brothers and sisters.
Charity's legacy continues through her devoted son, Attorney James H. Moore III, and his wife Jane of Ashland, KY and her daughter Melodee Moore Dean and her husband Rick of Floral City, FL, her four surviving grandchildren, Deborah Wilson (Bob), Elizabth Oatis (Kenneth), Kristy Click (James), and Julie Moore (Harley Hale), as well as her twelve great grandchildren, twelve great-great grandchildren, and a special niece, Sheri Pursley.
Charity extended her passion for helping others through her impressive career as a Registered Nurse. After attending West Virginia University, she graduated from Camden Memorial Hospital Nursing School and went on to serve her country as a member of the United States Army Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II. Her service as a lifelong healer continued through her role as an emergency room nurse at King's Daughters Hospital and as a nurse at the Ashland Oil refinery. Charity found great pride in helping others throughout her healthcare career.
Apart from her professional career, Charity was known for her unwavering dedication to volunteer work. For 35 years, she volunteered as a nurse for the American Red Cross and taught home nursing courses through the Red Cross. In her later years, she acted as a volunteer guide at King's Daughters Medical Center. Her leadership skills shone brightly as she served as the past president of the Ashland unit of the Kentucky Parliamentarian's Club.
Charity was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, where she founded a bible fund in honor of her husband that presented personalized bibles to church's sixth grade students for many years.
Charity was strong in her faith throughout her entire life. Outside of church, you could often find her reading from her bible, listening to Dr. Charles Stanley, or playing traditional church hymns on her piano at home. She was a talented musician, having taught herself to play both piano and guitar, as well as read sheet music.
She took great pride in her garden and would work tirelessly in her yard to make sure her flowers thrived. Charity was a wonderful friend and neighbor to all who knew her and will be missed greatly.
The family wishes to extend it's sincerest thanks to The Lantern at Morning Pointe for its outstanding care during Charity's later years and to the staff at KDMC Comfort Care for their compassion during her last days.
