Clarence "Critten" Adkins, 57 of Grayson, formerly of Sandy Hook, went to be with his Lord on Monday, September 2, 2019 at his home.
Critten fought a courageous battle with cancer (sarcoma) for 385 days.
He was born on December 27, 1961 in Zenia, Ohio, a son of the late Clarence B. Adkins (Big C) and Eva Jane Goodman Adkins of Sandy Hook, Kentucky.
Clarence was a 1979 graduate of Elliott County High School. He went into pipefitting where he worked for 19 years and was known on the job as "Little C." He became Elliott County High School's first welding instructor in 1998, and held that position for 28 years.
Clarence loved sharing the trade of welding with his students and also loved hearing stories of past students of where they had worked using the trade. During his teaching career he obtained a BA degree in Industrial Education from Morehead State University and also a real estate license where he worked part time with Little Sandy Realty.
Clarence was a member of Maranatha Bible Church in Webbville, Kentucky where he had been a member for 14 years. He also was a member of Hepburn Lodge 576 Sandy Hook, Kentucky where he served as Past Master and was currently serving as secretary until his illness. He was a member of the Scottish Rite 32 degree, El Hasa Shrine: Clan 1 Outhouse 2, a Kentucky Colonel, a member of Pipefitters Local 785 out of Raleigh, North Carolina, Eastern Star, Grayson 10, where he had served as Past Worthy Patron and Past President of the Elliott County Shrine Club.
Clarence was preceded in death by his father, Clarence B. Adkins; paternal grandparents the late David and Opal Ratcliff Adkins; and maternal grandparents the late Keener and Ethel Evans Goodman, all of Sandy Hook; and in-laws the late John and Freda Burton Conley from Grayson, Kentucky.
He is survived by his loving wife, Johnda Conley Adkins, whom he met on November 27, 2003 and married on June 12, 2004. They recently celebrated their 15 year wedding anniversary. He is also survived by his mother, Eva Jane Adkins of Sandy Hook; a son, Seth Alan Adkins of Flemingsburg, Ky.; daughter, Lauren J. Adkins of Frankfort, Ky.; two sisters, Melinda (Rick) Skaggs of Hillsboro, Ky. and Roma Michelle Adkins of Sandy Hook; one niece, Kevana Skaggs; one great niece, Ariah Opal Skaggs; maternal aunt Ethel (Dale) Howard; two paternal aunts, Roma Cook of Springboro, Ohio, Regina Knoxx of Middletown; special cousins Claire Beth and Chase Carter which he thought of as his grandchildren; and his loving buddy, "Biscuit"; and many other family and friends who will mourn his passing.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Lewis and Ferguson Funeral Home with Masonic Services at 10 a.m. conducted by Hepburn Lodge 576 F & AM with burial at East Carter Memory Gardens in Grayson, Ky. Friends may call Friday, September 6, from 1 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers include Bobby Dale Cook, James Allen Stegall, Ron Craig, Clavis Dickerson, Rick McDowell, Ronnie Hall Jr., Robert Wright, Matt Harris, Dale Howard, Brandon Howard, Leavon Bair, and Seth Adkins.
Honorary pallbearers include Maranatha Bible Church Men, Hepburn Lodge 576, and former welding students of Elliott County High School.
