Donna Mae Purvis Obituary

Catlettsburg, Kentucky - Donna Mae Samples Purvis, 83, of Catlettsburg, KY died peacefully, Wednesday October 15, 2025, at the Ashland Community Hospice Care Center.

Donna was born on December 31, 1941, in the tiny hamlet of Elkview, WV, overlooking the historic Elk River. The 4th of five children, Donna was the only daughter of the late Homer and Beulah Buffington Samples. In addition to her parents, Donna was also preceded in death by her beloved husband Paul E. Purvis, in 2008.

Donna was a volunteer for many years at the Gift Shop at King's Daughters Medical Center and actively participated in events at the Russell Senior Center. Known for her great sense of humor, Donna's infectious laughter lifted the spirits of many, in addition to her famous homemade fudge and chocolate confections.

Survivors include her two daughters, Shirley Akers Gouffon of Atlanta, GA and Bonnie Akers Bishop of Charlotte, NC; two brothers, James Samples of Danville, IN and Earl Samples of Kenova, WV; two granddaughters, Kalyn Bishop Puckett and husband Matthew and Kyleigh Danielle Bishop.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday October 23, 2025, at the STEEN FUNERAL HOME, CENTRAL AVENUE CHAPEL. There will be a private service conducted Friday October 24, 2025, at the Rose Hill Mausoleum Chapel by Chaplain Jimm Smedley.
