Herb Conley Obituary
Lexington, Kentucky - Coach Herb Conley, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at the age of 84. His life was defined by faith, humility, leadership, and an unwavering love for others.
Born August 31, 1941, Herb grew up in Ashland, Kentucky. He earned a football scholarship to the University of Kentucky, a testament to his talent and discipline. Later, he transferred to Eastern Kentucky University, where he completed his degree in education. He returned home to serve the community he loved, teaching and coaching in the Ashland Independent School System for many years before moving into administration. After a brief retirement, he returned to his true passion—teaching and coaching at Symmes Valley High School.
Herb was truly born to lead men and to coach. A proud Ashland Tomcat, he was a standout player on the 1958 State Championship football team, where his leadership and competitive spirit first began to shine. His passion for the game and his gift for inspiring others naturally led him into coaching.
As an assistant coach on the 1967 State Championship team, Herb helped build one of the most respected programs in Kentucky. In 1975, he guided the famous "JAWS" team to the State At-Large Championship, a triumph that solidified his legacy as one of Ashland's all-time great coaches.
Coach Conley's players knew him as more than just a coach. He was a teacher, a mentor, and a man of principle who demanded effort, discipline, and teamwork. He believed that success on the field was built by character off it—and many of his players carried those lessons with them long after graduation.
Despite all the championships, honors, and accolades, Herb remained a man of remarkable humility. He never sought the spotlight and gave all glory to God, his players, and his fellow coaches. He gave his life to the Lord in 1977. From that day forward, his faith in Jesus Christ guided his journey, and he lived it daily as a faithful servant and devoted member of Unity Baptist Church.
Above all, Herb loved his family. Janice, the love of his life, was his greatest earthly blessing, and they shared many cherished days walking together on the beach. His three sons and grandchildren were his greatest joy. His friends and former players cherished him for his loyalty, encouragement, and unwavering strength.
Coach Herb Conley will forever be remembered as a man who led with grace, coached with passion, and lived with purpose. His influence reaches far beyond the football field—into the hearts of those he taught, coached, and loved.
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight."
(Proverbs 3:5-6 NASB)
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janice Conley; his parents, Leycester and Carrie Ferguson Conley; and his brothers, Paul Conley, J.B. Conley and Carroll Gene Conley.
He is survived by his sons, Greg Conley (Therese), Shawn Conley (Jackie), and Jeff Conley (Teresa); his sister, Jo Ann Lykins; his grandchildren, Haley, Hannah, Vanessa, Neil, Cody, and Cameron; and his great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Everleigh, Everett, Ava, and Jensen.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2026, at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel and from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Unity Baptist Church.
