Ashland,, Kentucky - John Berton McClanahan, Jr, of Ashland, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2025. John was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on April 26, 1947 to the late Susie Helena Greene McClanahan and John B. McClanahan, Sr. A 1964 graduate of Ashland High School, he later studied at the University of Kentucky earning a Bachelor's in Chemistry and his Bachelor's of Science in Pharmacy in 1971. John practiced pharmacy for 25 years in Eastern Kentucky, retiring at Rite Aid in South Ashland. He was a member of the KY Pharmacy Association and a KY Hospital Pharmacist in the 80's.

Community involvement was important for John. He was a board member and later president of the Hack Estep Home for Boys. John served on the Champion's Coalition for Boyd County Schools. He was member of the Lions Club, a Kentucky Colonel, and a lifetime member of the UK Alumni Association. Being a lifelong fan of the University of Kentucky Wildcats, one of John's favorite memories was shaking the hand of Coach Adolph Rupp.

John is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jilson Conley McClanahan; one sister, Barbara Sue McClanahan of Ashland; one son, John B. McClanahan, III (Tré) and his wife Alaina M. McClanahan of Paris, KY; as well as one beloved grandson, John Alexander McClanahan (Xander).

Visitation will be held from 12:00pm to 1:00pm Friday, June 27, 2025 at Steen Funeral Home at 3409 13th Street in Ashland, KY with funeral to follow at 1:00pm. Burial will follow at Ashland Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Woodland Oaks and Community Hospice for their care extended to our loved one.
