Greenup, Kentucky - Stephen Leo "Steve" Tackett, 83, of Lloyd, KY went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth following a sudden illness. He was born in Pikeville, KY on January 11, 1942, a son of the late Ora Leo & Cora Myrtle Stewart Tackett.
Steve was a retired Superintendent of Police for the CSX Railroad. He began his law enforcement career with the Kentucky State Police as a radio operator, later serving as a road trooper before joining and becoming a railroad detective/special agent.
Steve graduated from Virgie High School in 1960, then attended Berea College, Pikeville College and Morehead State University. He then graduated from the Kentucky State Police Academy's 33rd Cadet Trooper Class in 1965.
Steve was a Certified Firearms Instructor, an Expert Marksman through the NRA, a Police Instructor's Certification through the KY Law Enforcement Council, a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and a Kentucky Colonel. Steve also taught Railroad Safety classes to numerous students and schools throughout the area.
He was preceded in death along with his parents by a brother, Glenn Allen Tackett.
Steve is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Juanita Adkins Tackett; a son, Stephen Shon Tackett and his wife Michelle of Lloyd; a daughter, Kimberly Michelle Miller and her husband John of Lloyd; Five grandchildren, Elijah Shon Tackett and his wife Kayla, Stephen Craig Tackett and his wife Breelyn, Maggie Rian Miller, Marlie Grace Miller and Luke Thomas Miller; Three great grandchildren, Gracie Jane Tackett, Jake Curtis Tackett and Stephen Cade Tackett, along with a host of extended family and friends that loved him dearly.
Steve retired from CSX in 2003 and devoted more of his time as a "Papaw", a collector of antiques, an expert repairman who could fix anything broken. He also loved repairing and building clocks.
Steve was a man of very strong character and integrity, leading by example in every aspect of his life by demonstrating love, kindness, respect and always ready to listen and offer words of encouragement and advice. He was a skilled storyteller and loved telling a funny joke to make others laugh and smile.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at Wright's Funeral Home in Greenup, KY by Brother Russ Foster. Burial will follow in the Brick Union Cemetery in Lloyd, KY.
Visitation will be from 11 AM till the time of the funeral service on Sunday at the funeral home.
